Pizza as a Savior During Rough Times Can you imagine going from being a rich stock broker to gluing pizza coupons on delivery boxes for a living? Most people can't. But at least one man can not only imagine it, he's living it every day.
There have been a lot of media reports about him in the news recently. His name is Ken Karpman and he lives in Clearwater. Not long ago he was a high flying equities trader, but when the economy went south, his job disappeared. Now he's working a a pizza delivery driver for $7.50 an hour plus tips. When there's no deliveries, he helps out making food, cleaning up, or gluing pizza coupons on boxes for future deliveries.
A lot of people might consider Ken Karpman a failure, but not me. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him. As far as I'm concerned, it takes a real man with real courage to not be too proud to work for a living, even if he's only making about a fiftieth of the amount of his previous salary. That's right - a fiftieth. He used to pull down $750,000 a year trading stocks. For a 40 hour week, that comes to about $360 an hour. Now he's making 7.50 an hour. Of course, he probably gets tips which could possibly double his wages to $15 an hour, but it's still a long way from $750,000.
He's married with kids, and his house is now in foreclosure. It's a 5000 square foot mansion. Obviously, he'll have to move his family to new digs soon. And he lost his $80,000 Mercedes, too. It has to be tough to lose all that and wake up every day and go out and get some money for your family. Not many men have the courage that Ken Karpman has. And I hope that if I ever fell from such lofty heights, I wouldn't be too proud to glue Dominoes pizza coupons on delivery boxes.
